Active ProjectsMy ongoing research projects cross scientific disciplines and knowledge sources to link multidisciplinary data and Indigenous Knowledge to address grand challenge questions and provide data products designed for multiple audiences, from scientific groups to Indigenous Communities. These products visualize, link, and discover critical data. This track was inspired by challenges in discovering, connecting, and aggregating data in my own research on how people in the past interacted with marginal environments, including the U.S. Southwest and the Arctic. I have years of field experience in the U.S. Southwest, Peru, Orkney, and Iceland pursuing questions on long-term human ecodynamics through various lenses, including via soils and landscapes.

DataARC |
DataARC is supported by two grants from the National Science Foundation (SMA 1439389 and SMA 1637076) to support the linking of databases and development of data products to enable research on the long-term human ecodynamics of the North Atlantic.

ELOKA |
Funded by multiple NSF Grants (PLR 0632345, PLR 0856634, PLR 1231130, and PLR 1513438), ELOKA facilitates the collection, preservation, exchange, and use of local observations and knowledge of the Arctic. ELOKA provides data management and user support, and fosters collaboration between resident Arctic experts and visiting researchers. My specific role focuses on innovating new projects for ELOKA and creating educational and outreach materials for a variety of audiences that are interested in ELOKA initiatives, including Indigenous communities and scientists.

Indigenous Food and Data Sovereignty Network |
The Indigenous Food and Data Sovereignty Network is a developing community interested in how to ethically collect, share, access, and visualize data, information, and documented Indigenous Knowledge to address food sovereignty in Indigenous communities. Our core network members are Indigenous people, supported by researchers who are committed to issues of food and Indigenous data sovereignty. We focus on two regions - the Arctic and the U.S. Southwest - to broaden perspectives and to build collaborations and networks of people who can share insights from their personal experiences to build capacity for food sovereignty in these regions.

Funded under the Long-Term Vulnerability and Transformation Project (BCS 0508001 and CNH 1113991), I work with a team modeling how people would have incorporated various strategies (establishing social networks, using wild resources, etc.) to mediate risk of food shortfall in the prehispanic U.S. Southwest.

My main field and lab work focused on soils in prehispanic contexts in both the U.S. Southwest and Peru. I work mainly in agricultural contexts, trying to understand how long-term farming practices affected soil quality. Main case studies come from long-term irrigated systems, while other smaller case studies are in dry farmed regions.

The PermaDATA project focuses on standardizing and integrating permafrost data from across the Arctic to make it more widely available, discoverable, and linkable. As a part of the PermaDATA team, I assist with all Informatics-related work, leading objectives related to systems integration.
